South Dakota law enforcement agencies stepping into immigration breach
Hundreds of agencies across the country join ICE, Donald Trump in enforcing immigration laws
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and Highway Patrol are joining a wave of local law enforcement agencies that are volunteering to assist federal authorities to enforce immigration laws.
Both Gov. Larry Rhoden and Attorney General Marty Jackley have requested authority under a program known as 287(g). That program allows local law enforcement agencies to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
They join both the Minnehaha and Hughes County sheriff’s offices among South Dakota agencies participating in the program. Both joined in March.
