Replacement of Richmond Lake dam a priority of state's, but timeline unknown
Dam in northeast South Dakota considered high risk for failure putting community at risk
The timeline for replacement of a dam on the verge of failure near Aberdeen hinges on the state’s ability to tap into a federal grant program.
To date, state legislators have contributed $9.6 million toward construction of a new dam and spillway at Richmond Lake, which is estimated to cost about $20 million. South Dakota’s School and Public Lands (S&PL) office is in charge of coordinating the project — and they say that more money from the Legislature could be requested as soon as next year.
S&PL Commissioner Brock Greenfield said that state money came in two different iterations — $6.5 million approved during the 2023 legislative session and $3.1 more this year.
