McKennan Park namesake's legacy galvanized as part of $4.7M pool project
Central Sioux Falls aquatics facility closed until work on its replacement is completed in 2026
A new aquatics facility is underway in one of the oldest parks in the city of Sioux Falls.
Work on a $4.7 million wading pool at McKennan Park has begun, with city officials commemorating the replacement of the central Sioux Falls park’s existing, 50-year-old pool with a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday.
“McKennan Park holds a special place in the hearts of Sioux Falls residents,” Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Director Don Kearney.
Removal of the original McKennan Park wading pool started last month ahead of construction on a new bathhouse, a redesigned wading pool and new zero-depth entry and spray features. The plans also include shade structures and new landscaping.
A donation from Pierce and Barbara McDowell will help fund some of the enhancements, like an expanded concessions area, architectural elements to the bathhouse, shade structures, additional spray features in the pool and a variety of park amenities such as planters, benches and a sculpture that will recognize Helen McKennan, the Sioux Falls woman who donated the parkland in 1906.
“This project honors Helen McKennan’s legacy and ensures that this space continues to be a source of joy and recreation for generations to come,” Kearney said.
The McDowells were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony.
“Our family has loved McKennan Park for generations, and even today, we consider it a magical place,” Pierce McDowell said. “We know so many others do, too.”
The McKennan Park wading pool will be closed for the duration of the renovation and is expected to open in time for the 2026 swim season.
Thank you McDowells. Your gift shows your appreciation for the city that has blessed many of our lives. Putting it towards this valuable park in our city means much to its history.
