Don’t expect South Dakota’s Republican governor to join Monae Johnson in breaking GOP ranks by publicly backing the Democratic candidate in the race for secretary of state.

But the Republican nominee who upset Johnson’s reelection bid earlier this year isn’t likely to be endorsed by the governor either.

“We have a Republican primary and a convention — I support the Republican ticket,” Gov. Larry Rhoden said this week, declining to offer a full-throated endorsement of GOP secretary of state candidate Heather Baxter.
