I write this letter to alert the citizens of Fall River County that the South Dakota State Water Board published two new water permit applications to enable in situ leach uranium mining by a multinational corporation, Powertech USA, at the Dewey Burdock site north of Edgemont. The implications for our county are enormous, but by the time this letter is published, citizens will have less than FOUR DAYS to register a public comment or apply to be a party in the Water Board hearing.
I admit that I’m tired of seeing my name in the newspaper, talking about uranium. I imagine that some of my fellow citizens are also tired of reading it. I’m sure most of us would prefer to read something else, or just get back to our regularly scheduled lives.
And of course, for Powertech USA and the foreign financial interests who control them, that is not an accident. They want us tired, and focused on our regularly scheduled lives, so that they can steal our resources and secure the rights to poison our home before anybody notices and takes action to stop them.
