The U.S. Postal Service is moving forward with plans to outsource the bulk of South Dakota’s outgoing mail distribution operations to Omaha.

That’s according to an announcement from USPS obtained by The Dakota Scout. While the Postal Service will invest millions to upgrade its facility in Sioux Falls, the “business case” favors moving outgoing mail transfer operations to the Nebraska metro.

“The business case supports transferring mail processing outgoing operations to the Omaha Processing and Distribution Center,” a USPS press release. “Currently, a majority of mail and packages are destined outside the Sioux Falls area to the rest of the world.”

The announcement makes good on a plan to convert the Sioux Falls regional processing and distribution center into a “local processing center,” one of 190 in the country. Those local processing centers will serve 60 regional processing centers — of which Omaha would be one.
