AG argues plaintiffs lack standing in proof of citizenship voting lawsuit

A voter registration group and a Sioux Falls man do not have standing to challenge a state law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office argues in court filings.

The League of Women Voters and Sioux Falls resident Jaysen Hill challenged parts of the new law that went into effect earlier this year after the Legislature passed Senate Bill 175. The new law stipulates that voters who don’t offer proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of a residential address as opposed to a Post Office box or mail forwarding address can’t receive ballots for state and local elections. Instead, they receive a ballot with only federal contests.
