State Theatre celebrating century mark with historic movies, special events
Sioux Falls gem opened with rise of cinema; survived arrival of malls and multiplexes
After surviving a Depression, a world war, suburban flight and three decades in the dark, the Sioux Falls State Theatre is preparing for its biggest encore yet: a 100th-birthday celebration that doubles as a declaration of survival.
The iconic theater in downtown Sioux Falls officially hits the century mark on March 2. And to celebrate the historic milestone, the iconic silver screen will showcase dozens of legendary films marking each film era since “The State” first opened its doors in 1926.
“It really was the jewel of downtown, and it thrived for decades,” State Theatre Executive Director Alison Weiland said this week while briefing city officials on plans to commemorate a century of endurance.
