South Dakota's 144-year-old prison again deemed unfit, replacement recommended
Project Prison Reset Task Force affirms DOC assessment; location, scope of prison projects still uncertain
SPRINGFIELD — South Dakota’s state penitentiary has to go.
That’s the takeaway following seven hours of proceedings Tuesday by Gov. Larry Rhoden’s Project Prison Reset Task Force, which reached consensus that the 144-year-old prison complex in Sioux Falls — known as “The Hill” — no longer meets the state’s correctional needs.
“As you’ve seen if you walk through it, we can’t do nothing. We have to do something,” said Attorney General Marty Jackley, a member of the task force who made the motion that the panel recommend replacing the original penitentiary.
