South Dakota tribe cites drug, gun violence in latest emergency declaration
Rosebud leaders warn of public safety crisis, renew request federal support
The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has declared a state of emergency due to what tribal officials describe as an escalating crisis fueled by methamphetamine trafficking, illicit drug use and gun violence on the western South Dakota reservation.
“This crisis poses immediate and severe risks to public safety, community health, and tribal welfare,” said tribal president Kathleen Wooden Knife in a statement Tuesday.
