PIERRE – High school athletes on varsity teams could earn credit toward their physical education requirement under a bill approved Wednesday by the House Education Committee.

South Dakota currently requires high school students to complete half a credit of physical education – or gym – before they can receive their diplomas.

But a group of student athletes led by Rapid City Stevens senior Trent Policky requested that lawmakers allow participation in varsity sports to meet that requirement. Policky, a soccer standout who was named to the All-State team last year, convinced Rep. Kathy Rice to carry the legislation.
