It started on the living room rug, with a couple of kids trying to wrestle like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — and their father worrying that one of their high-flying moves would end with a trip to the emergency room.
Rather than stop them, he took them to a martial arts mat and taught them how to throw, roll and fall without getting hurt.
The Bruners were hooked.
That simple decision opened the door to a new world for the Brandon family and, eventually, became the kind of story that defines the Sioux Falls Hapkido and Judo Club, a tight-knit martial arts community on Minnesota Avenue with about 40 members ranging from 8-year-old children to adults.
