On Sept. 4, Xcel Energy and Otter Tail Power Company filed a facility permit application with the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission for PowerOn Midwest, a major milestone for this new investment in our state’s energy infrastructure.
As the state begins its review of this project, we want to pause and thank the residents of Brookings, Deuel and Grant, counties who have engaged with us throughout the preapplication and route development process. We’ve heard from hundreds of community members through community events, public meetings or direct comments submitted to us. Your input has directly shaped this application, and we’re grateful for it.
PowerOn Midwest is a long-term investment in South Dakota and the Upper Midwest’s energy future: a series of new electric transmission projects anchored by a 765 kV backbone line. The project will connect eastern South Dakota and southern Minnesota, strengthening grid reliability, easing system congestion and helping ensure homes, farms and businesses have the reliable power they need as energy demand continues to grow.
