Senate committee moves to eliminate firearm suppressors as controlled weapons
Sen. Casey Crabtree says move follows Trump administration efforts to deregulate the devices

PIERRE — A Senate committee Thursday wasted little time in voting to remove firearm suppressors from a list of controlled weapons under South Dakota law.
The move to deregulate the devices, which dampen the cracking report of a firearm, is part of a broader federal effort to loosen restrictions, Sen. Casey Crabtree, the bill’s sponsor, told the Senate Judiciary Committee. At the urging of the Trump administration, Congress did away with its federal tax on suppressors last summer.
Suppressors, Crabtree said, are not weapons. Instead, they are safety devices intended to protect hearing.
