S.D. Supreme Court justice, former Sioux Falls city attorney dies
Amundson joined Mayor Dave Munson's administration after retiring from Court
Retired South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Robert Amundson died Wednesday in Sioux Falls, the Unified Judicial System announced Thursday afternoon. He was 86.
Amundson had a decades long career in the legal field that culminated when Gov. George Mickelson appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1991. He retired from the Court in 2002.
Following his time on the Court, he agreed to serve as Sioux Falls City attorney when his longtime friend, Mayor Dave Munson, asked him to join the administration in Munson’s final two years in office. The two men had been friends since the 1950s and Munson had been in his wedding. When Munson won his first term as mayor in 2002, he asked Amundson to be the judge who swore him into office.
