South Dakota was at the center of a nationwide presidential stump in support of one of the largest tax cuts in U.S. history a quarter century ago this week. And President George W. Bush’s visit to the Mount Rushmore State also brought word of a thwarted assassination attempt.

The Texan turned commander in chief’s full-court press for a $1.6 trillion tax cut plan brought him to Sioux Falls. And according to the Mar. 10, 2001, edition of the Argus Leader, an Oregon man was also in town with his own plans for the visit — setting the president on fire.
