The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reopened the North Shore Campground near Fort Thompson at the Big Bend Project after closing it at the beginning of May. North Shore was one of nearly two dozen recreation centers closed along the Corps’ upper Missouri River dam project route. Other closures included power plant tours – including at the Oahe Dam outside of Pierre.

The Corps blamed the closures on staffing shortages, saying it didn’t have the resources to “safely” monitor the areas. They came on the cusp of peak travel and recreation seasons in the Dakotas.

So, what saved Noth Shore? Volunteers.
