The Aberdeen City Council has, for now, delayed signing a contract with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. The DCI wants the city to provide electricity for two license plate scanners it plans to install at a key intersection, according to The Aberdeen Insider.

But the Council had questions. Councilman Rob Ronayne, an attorney, wanted to know who would own the information collected by the cameras and whether it could be subpoenaed. And Councilor Alan Johnson wanted to know how long DCI kept the information.

The scanners on the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and Melgaard Road would take photographs of vehicle plates, both the front and back, Police Chief Tanner Jondahl told the councilors. The photos would then be used to match vehicles that have been reported stolen.
