SCOUTING REPORT | Aberdeen's abandoned tombstones, make-believe patriarchy, lauding good school libraries
A weekly digest of interesting local, state, national and even international developments
Richmond Lake northwest of Aberdeen is being drained in order to make repairs that were urgently needed to the dam spillway. Among the discoveries in the receding waters was something potentially alarming.
About a dozen headstones have been found in the lakebed. Initially, there were concerns they might be part of an abandoned cemetery, and local authorities were notified. The stones were found by Samantha Kolb of Aberdeen. She has been cleaning garbage from the lakebed as the water level drops.
Kolb posted photos of the headstones to her Facebook account. According to The Aberdeen Insider, Kolb’s photos caught the attention of Tasha Tietz, an Aberdeen woman who researches old cemeteries and tombstones. She goes by the nickname “Graveyard Girl” on social media.
