The company that runs Facebook and Instagram will pay one of the largest consumer protection settlements in state history, Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Wednesday.
Meta Platforms Inc. will pay at least $52.6 million to the state as part of a $17.1 billion multistate settlement over child protection measures. The settlement is among the largest outside the Big Tobacco settlements of the 1990s, and could provide South Dakota with as much as $73.5 million if certain conditions are met. The state’s share will be paid over 10 years.
The settlement requires approval from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, which is hearing a lawsuit filed against Meta by South Dakota and 28 other states.
“This is an issue Washington should have dealt with to protect kids,” Jackley said during a press conference Wednesday. He blamed the federal government for protecting Meta and putting hurdles in the way of the multistate lawsuit.
