Mentors stepping up for children, community, but more needed

Mentor Jenna Lilyquist learned how to crochet – her mentee taught her. The duo enjoys reading, coloring, eating and talking during their weekly meet-up.
“Mentoring is my favorite part of the week,” says Lilyquist, who has been guiding the same student for nearly four years.
“I like hearing what’s going on in her life.”
The Sioux 52 Mentoring Initiative is celebrating National Mentoring Month this January in a push to recruit more mentors in schools and in the community. Organized in 2020, the initiative is a collaboration between the city, the Helpline Center and the Rotary Club of Downtown Sioux Falls. It operates under the concept that if each person put one hour a week into mentoring, lives could be transformed for the better.
