I am writing to express urgent concerns regarding the current state of public transportation services for wheelchair users in Sioux Falls. As someone with cerebral palsy, I rely on a power wheelchair for mobility and paratransit services to access essential aspects of my life.
Recently, I attempted to use Sioux Area Metro (SAM) Paratransit services to attend a volunteer event at the Bishop Dudley Center. Due to my vision impairment, I mistakenly entered the wrong address into the booking app, which directed the driver to a location somewhat near the Sheraton Hotel.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the center, and I requested to be taken to the gym instead, where I had a scheduled ride later in the day. Dispatch refused the change, and I was dropped off at the Sheraton Hotel. As a visually impaired wheelchair user, being stranded in an unfamiliar location with no safe way to return home left me feeling distraught. I was finally picked up around 4:30 p.m., after being stranded for three hours.
I have repeatedly raised these concerns at public transit meetings, but I am frequently interrupted and denied enough time to speak. It takes me longer to communicate due to my physical limitations, and I often leave these meetings feeling voiceless. Attempts to call and address my concerns directly with Paratransit have also been met with inaction.
I urge Sioux Falls leadership to prioritize inclusivity and safety by addressing these critical issues. Together, we can build a transportation system that truly supports all members of our community.

While I sympathize with the writer, the issue was caused by a mistake that he made.
"Dispatch refused the change, and I was dropped off at the Sheraton Hotel." This sounds crazy!
