Kamylle Rose Wagner, 16, of Volga, SD will always be remembered for her courage during difficult times. Unfortunately, this time the struggle was too difficult. She lost her long-fought battle with depression and went to be with Jesus on January 19, 2026. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. A Visitation will be held the night prior from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings.
Known to her family and friends as Kamy, she was born on April 25, 2009, in Sioux Falls, SD, and was the beloved daughter of Martin and Jennie Wagner of Volga. She was the firstborn and was later blessed with a younger brother, Rennick, in 2012, whom Kamy protected and fiercely advocated for, and a little sister and built-in best friend, Mira, in 2013.
Born with a spirit that was unmistakably her own, Kamy was curious, independent, and strong-willed. She feared nothing and tried everything. She had remarkable patience for building complex Legos and never passed up an opportunity to take a spin in a rocking chair or swing. Kamy loved learning and naturally emerged as a leader, drawing people to her with a magnetic personality, contagious smile, and beautiful, big brown eyes.
Kamy attended Grace Point preschool in Brookings and Sioux Valley Schools in Volga, where she was currently in the 11th grade. She enjoyed running as a middle schooler and was involved in cross country and track. She was known for setting a middle school track record in a race where she famously lost a shoe and kept going. Kamy was also involved in Girls on The Run, Girl Scouts, volleyball, wrestling, cross country, and chorus. She excelled in band, playing the trumpet, as well as oral interpretation.
Music was Kamy’s refuge and joy. Rarely without her headphones, she was always immersed in a song. She loved singing her favorite karaoke songs at “Matt & Kerri’oke” gatherings, where her lovely voice lit up the room. Musically gifted, Kamy was an active member of the Sioux Valley Chorus and was selected to participate in the Festival of Young Voices and the BEC Honors Choir.
Kamy was fun to be around, easy going, and known for her infectious laugh, quick wit, and the ability to take a joke and return a playful jab without missing a beat. She brought warmth and energy wherever she went. She adored her cat, Venus, who was a source of comfort, and calm when she felt empty and lost. She liked cruising in the car with her friends, where the music was always loud and the steering wheel was her drum, hanging out at the park, making TikTok videos with friends, and late-night drives with her little sister.
Kamy was deeply connected to her family and especially her cousins. She had a very close and unique relationship with her mother, Jennie, whom she adored and called her “person”. Kamy loved her boyfriend and soulmate, Samuel, whose patience and support is what fueled her desire to keep fighting when she wanted to give up.
Kamy’s death has left an immeasurable void and sent shockwaves through her family, school, and community. It has changed the trajectory of countless lives, reminding those who loved her, and those now holding one another closer, of how deeply one life can touch so many.
Kamy is preceded in death by her grandfathers, David Olson, and Mark Wagner. She is survived by her parents, Martin and Jennie Wagner, her brother, Rennick Wagner, her sister, Mira Wagner, her grandparents, Rosie Wagner and Monte and Jean Petersen. Aunts and uncles, Monica (Brian) Daniel of Elmhurst IL, Matt (Kerri) Wagner of Volga SD, Mike (Brandi) Olson of Elkton SD, Matt (Laura) Olson of Elkton SD, Haley (Adam) Panka of Ivanhoe MN, Marty (Brandi) Petersen of Sioux Falls SD, Quinn Petersen of Sioux Falls, nineteen first cousins, and many extended family and friends who loved her deeply and will carry her spirit forward.
A memorial has been established at Dakotaland Federal Credit Union in Kamy’s honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests to have donations made to Martin & Jennie Wagner for the Kamylle Wagner Memorial fund. The family seeks to shine a light on depression, mental health awareness and suicide prevention through the Prairie Light Refuge, https://prairielightrefuge.org.
