PIERRE – County governments will have an option to implement a new half-cent sales tax following passage of legislation in the South Dakota House of Representatives Thursday.

The bill represents one of Gov. Larry Rhoden’s key initiatives to reduce property taxes on owner-occupied homes.

Senate Bill 96 allows county commissions to impose up to a half-cent sales tax. The money generated by the revenue would be required to offset property taxes in counties that chose to impose the tax. Any decision by a commission to impose the tax could be referred by voters.
