Edmunds County puts final touches on $8.4 million jail
Sheriff Jonathan Waldner hoping extra cells will generate revenue for county
IPSWICH – The new Edmunds County Law Enforcement Center should be open, offering more needed jail beds for northeastern South Dakota in a matter of weeks.
It includes a 40-bed jail and has been under construction for the past year and a half. During a recent tour, Edmunds County Sheriff Jonathan Waldner said the roughly $8.4 million facility features four eight-person pods and two four-person pods. The four-person pods feature two two-person cells for sleeping and a day area where inmates can visit. The eight-person pods are one room with a combined sleeping and seating area.
Each cell has a skylight allowing in natural light — a requirement for facilities looking to house federal inmates. They also have mirrored safety glass on the doors so detainees can’t see what’s happening outside their cells.
