3M reports ‘forever chemicals’ contamination in soil, groundwater near Aberdeen plant
Company did not notify Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources following discovery
Higher-than-allowed levels of manmade “forever chemicals” that have the potential to cause environmental and health problems have been found in soil and groundwater near Aberdeen’s 3M plant.
Testing has revealed levels that are above what’s allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
However, a state official said there’s nothing to show there’s a health risk at this time.
Technically, the chemicals are called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, but they are commonly referred to as PFAS. They include a wide group of manmade chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer products since about 1950. They are found in nonstick cookware and are good for waterproofing and stain resistance.
