South Dakota is making two workforce bets at once. It is helping employers adopt artificial intelligence, and it is strengthening the apprenticeship infrastructure that teaches people through real work.
Those bets should become one strategy.
The state Department of Labor and Regulation recently offered employers funding to support AI adoption and workforce upskilling. At the same time, South Dakota created a state office of apprenticeship to promote, register and oversee apprenticeship programs. The Dakota Scout also reported this month that Southeast Technical College broke ground on an $18 million advanced manufacturing lab expected to expand hands-on technical preparation.
The missing link is mentor time.
