The Dakota Scout ran a story recently marking the 50th anniversary of The Bluffs, one of Sioux Falls’ earliest homeowner associations and one of the developments that first introduced this city to a different kind of homeownership.

It caught my attention for a second reason. The Bluffs is turning 50. Village Cooperative of Sioux Falls just turned 5. Worth sitting with that comparison for a minute.

Fifty years ago, attached, maintenance-free homeownership was a foreign concept here. Now townhomes, condos and HOAs are just part of how the city works. I suspect senior cooperative housing is standing roughly where that idea stood five decades back.
