It pays to show up.

That was the lesson from Tuesday’s Minnehaha County Commission meeting. The commission took the unusual step of holding public hearings on three property owners accused of harboring nuisance conditions. Two of the three property owners who showed up won reprieves – including one who threatened to put a hog barn on his land – while the third did not.

That means the county will pay to have junk removed from the residence at 47565 Neener Circle, which is about 2.5 miles north of Sioux Falls and owned by Randall and Janice Menefee. The costs of the cleanup, including the removal of what appears to be an inoperable camper, will be assessed to the property.
