Thune to seek Senate leadership post, calls for GOP unity
Number-two Republican hopes to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell
Sen. John Thune said Monday that with former President Donald Trump expected to cruise to comfortable victories in Super Tuesday’s nominating contests, it’s time for the Republican Party to come together for the General Election.
While stopping just short of calling on former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to drop out, he said it was clear following her performance in the South Carolina primary that Trump would be the nominee. Thune endorsed Trump following his win over Haley in South Carolina.

“You’re getting to the point where it’s time to unify,” Thune told The Dakota Scout. “I waited until after South Carolina. I wanted to give her a chance to see how she would do in her home state. When that was a decisive outcome for Trump, it became clear to me that he was going to be the nominee, and I said I would support the nominee.”
Tuesday’s primary and caucuses will be in 16 states, the largest single day of voting during the nomination process. Polling nationally and in statewide races show Trump with commanding leads over Haley.
