Thousands to join annual Avera Race Against Cancer on May 10
37th year sees events in communities across the region
More than 6,000 participants and 400 volunteers are expected to take part in the 37th Avera Race Against Cancer on Saturday, May 10, with events planned across the Avera system in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre and Yankton, South Dakota, as well as Marshall, Minnesota.
The annual event supports local cancer patients and their families, raising funds for services ranging from lodging assistance to complementary therapies like massage and aromatherapy.
“The Avera Race is a wonderful event because it celebrates cancer survivorship, as well as those lives we have lost to this disease,” said Katie Van Beek, Avera’s vice president of oncology. “It’s an inspirational, meaningful time when communities come together to support cancer patients – past, present and future. Even after 37 years, it continues to gain momentum.”
Participants can choose from chip-timed 5K or 10K runs, 1.5-mile or 3-mile walks, or take part virtually from anywhere. Local events will also include survivor recognitions, group photos, refreshments, and other community-driven features depending on the location.
Registration includes a commemorative 2025 Avera Race T-shirt while supplies last.
Last year’s race raised a record-breaking $731,000. Since its inception, the event has generated over $12 million to benefit cancer patients, according to Reid Jensen, director of annual giving for the Avera Foundation.
“The Avera Race Against Cancer supports patients with all cancer types,” Jensen said. “Earlier in its history, the race centered around support of breast cancer patients, but we know that the cancer journey is challenging for patients with any cancer diagnosis.”
Proceeds help fund the Avera Cancer Institute Navigation Center, a 24/7 call center offering guidance and emotional support to individuals affected by cancer. Additional funds assist with transportation, genetic testing, wig programs, and healing initiatives such as Arts in Healing and Cancer Survivors Day.
“All dollars benefit patients and families locally,” Jensen said.
