A renowned South Dakota statesman has died.
R. Lars Herseth passed Saturday at the age of 80 following a bout with cancer, according to a death notice released by the family of the longtime lawmaker, agriculture leader and Houghton-area farmer and rancher.
“He passed away in his lifelong home overlooking the Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge surrounded by his loving family,” his obituary reads.
The son of South Dakota Gov. Ralph Herseth and former Secretary of State Lorna Buntrock Herseth, Lars Herseth became a prominent figure in South Dakota politics and the South Dakota Democratic Party, charting his own legacy as a leader in the state Legislature for two decades, including stints as president pro tempore and minority leader of the Senate as well as eight years as House minority leader.
