PIERRE – In 15 years leading the South Dakota Department of Tourism, Jim Hagen has weathered recessions and a once-in-a-century pandemic that crippled the entire world’s economy.

But the state Capitol veteran says the uncontrollable challenges in drawing global tourists to the Mount Rushmore State in 2025 will forever stand out.

After years of inflation eating away at the buying power of American consumers, 2025 started with economic uncertainty. Financial markets yo-yoed amid the president’s imposition of tariffs and threats of trade wars. People who wanted to take trips started reconsidering.
