Correction: A previous version said that Jamie Smith had made a formal request for a recount. As of Friday afternoon, the City Clerk’s Office had not received that request.

Sioux Falls’ mayoral election will go to a recount after a two-vote difference in the June 23 race.

Jamie Smith planned to file for the recount after the City Council canvassed the votes June 26 but had not officially made the request by Friday afternoon. Smith received 18,278 votes to Christine Erickson’s 18,280.

The official canvas was originally scheduled to be next Tuesday. With the election results so close, both parties chose to expedite the canvas so the recount could begin sooner.
