Sioux Falls is a growing city. And it’s not a surprise that with more people comes more crime.

Yet, somehow, it was the opposite in Sioux Falls last year.

Sioux Falls saw less violent crime in 2025 than the year prior, both in terms of the raw numbers and when accounting for population.

Fewer homicides, fewer rapes, fewer assaults and fewer robberies — all despite the city’s population growth of about 5,000 new residents.

The result is the third-straight year of a decreasing violent crime rate, per capita, in South Dakota’s largest city.
