Sheriff Mike Milstead endorses one of his captains to be next Minnehaha County sheriff

Longtime Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead is turning in his badge.
Milstead said he will not seek re-election to the post he has held since 1997. His departure at the end of the year would mark a career in law enforcement spanning 53 years.
“It’s time,” he told The Dakota Scout. “I still have a lot of things I’d like to do with my wife and my family and my grandkids.”

PIERRE — The South Dakota House on Tuesday rejected a bill that would have banned paid petition circulators, after opponents warned the proposal directly conflicted with long-standing U.S. Supreme Court precedent and could cost the state millions in legal fees.
