Wastewater, science collide again at South Dakota quantum physics lab
Sanford Underground Research Facility wastewater treatment overhauled decades after Homestake Mine engineers made world-changing scientific discovery
Correction: There is no sewage treated at SURF and the wastewater treated there is mine wastewater. The headline accompanied with an earlier version of this article indicated otherwise. The Dakota Scout strives for fairness and accuracy. We deeply regret the error.

At the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), a $4.4 million sewer system upgrade will retire infrastructure developed on site more than 50 years ago.
And the overhaul is also spotlighting how the Black Hills pioneered a scientific advancement transformed how the modern world handles human waste, and the mine-turned-quantum physics lab’s continued to commitment to environmental stewardship, according to SURF officials.
