South Dakota was in the middle of presidential campaign stops 50 years ago this week, with both President Gerald Ford and Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter trying to sway the state’s voters ahead of the upcoming election.
President Ford turned a refueling stop at Ellsworth Air Force Base into an early fall campaign rally on Aug. 29, 1976, according to the Rapid City Journal, while former Georgia governor Carter visited Sioux Falls for a rally just weeks later on Sept. 14, 1976, according to the Argus Leader.
