A quarter-century ago, a scheduling dispute over when South Dakota girls played their sports spiraled into a fight involving parents, politicians and even the U.S. Department of Justice. What followed forced one of the biggest changes in state high school athletics.
The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors reversed its decision 25 years ago this week and on Dec. 4, 2000, voted 7-0 to switch the high school girls basketball and volleyball seasons, according to the Rapid City Journal.
