South Dakota State University Extension is hitting the road with Native Plant Expos. The free events feature native plant packs that attendees can buy that are specific to their geographic areas.

“Native plants help people create landscapes that feel like home,” said Lora Perkins, a professor and SDSU Extension’s native plant specialist. “They are the plants that want to grow in South Dakota. They are adapted to our soils, weather and seasons. This makes our native plants practical choices for yards, gardens and community spaces.”

The events started West River in Rapid City and Spearfish June 5 and 6. Each is themed for conditions unique to their area. Rapid City’s was the Bad Soils Pack, with plants suited to harsh soil conditions. It also featured plants that support birds in the winter and native grasses. The Spearfish plants included ones that do well on a dry, sunny site or rock garden, and plants that butterflies in the Black Hills enjoy.
