From Watertown comes news that zebra mussels have launched an assault on the Cattail Crossing Golf Course’s irrigation system. Scott Schunter, the golf course superintendent, said he noticed a problem when several sprinkler heads were bubbling water out of the ground, he told The Watertown Current. A crew dug a 2-foot hole to remove a sprinkler head and found it infested with the waterborne pests.
The golf course has 18 miles of irrigation pipe and 1,000 sprinkler heads. And the concern is that the entire system has been compromised. Already, 40 sprinkler heads have been identified as being infested. This could be a major expense for the golf course.
“Every time we take water from Lake Kampeska, we are just adding zebra mussel larvae to the system,” Schunter said.
