Property tax relief package runs legislative gauntlet in session's final days
Gov. Larry Rhoden has endorsed five bills that achieve reductions, increase voter oversight
PIERRE – South Dakota lawmakers are poised to pass a package of bills aimed at lassoing rising property taxes as they head into their final week of the session in what would be the biggest reform to homeowner taxes in decades.
Five bills marching through the Capitol in the Legislature’s final days have the endorsement of Gov. Larry Rhoden. Two of them raise additional revenue to offset property taxes on homeowners, while two others deal with levies and assessments. A fifth lengthens the timeline for voters to refer property tax increases to the ballot box.
“I worked with the members of leadership in both chambers, including several of you in this room, to put this plan together,” Rhoden told lawmakers on the House State Affairs Committee on March 4. “This relief should be felt in both the short term and the long term.”
