Pierre to get TJ Maxx, Five Below in upgraded shopping center
Northridge Plaza on north side of town announces major additions
PIERRE — If you’re looking for a suit jacket or a pair of dress shoes in the capital city, your efforts in the near future will not require you to make a trip to Rapid City or buy online.
Northridge Plaza, Pierre’s mall, announced this week that the city would soon be adding a TJ Maxx and Five Below stores to the mall, located in north Pierre. Additionally, Maurice’s, a women’s clothing chain and longtime tenant of Northridge, will get a new and improved space and storefront.
“The addition of the new stores will expand the retail offerings available in central South Dakota. We can’t wait to share the new Northridge Plaza with our community,” said Glennis Zarecky, spokeswoman for Northridge Plaza.
In addition to the new stores, the mall will also undergo a series of renovations to the building itself, including public restrooms, a façade makeover and cosmetic enhancements. The mall itself, which includes several other stores and a restaurant, will remain open during the duration of the renovation.

The 40,000-square-foot remodel project will house three retailers along with other common area improvements. TJ Maxx will open a 23,500-square-foot store while Five Below will open in a 9,550-square-foot location. Maurices, which has been in Northridge Plaza and the Pierre community since 1989, will be in a new, modern 6,000-square-foot store.
In order to make space for the new retailers, two long-term tenants of the mall moved out last month, including a pizza shop and a music store. Pierre Music has since moved closer to downtown.
“Northridge Plaza is evolving and we are thrilled to offer new shopping opportunities in our region. We will continue to work to welcome additional regional and national retailers to Northridge Plaza,” Zarecky said.
It’s the latest in a string of big developments for the community of Pierre. Currently, a new hotel and business center will open downtown, while a new apartment complex is set to begin construction in the next several months. Also, the city just finished up work on a new water treatment plant, and construction continues on an outdoor public pool and waterpark.
“Basic economic development principles teach us the closer you spend your money to home, the better your local economy,” Pierre Mayor Steve Harding told The Dakota Scout. “The addition of TJ Maxx and Five Below, as well as improvements to Maurices, are a win for Pierre and the visitors who come here to shop.”
