Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead will call it a career a few weeks sooner than anticipated.
But the 53-year law enforcement veteran says his decision to make his final radio call about six weeks early reflects the confidence he has in the man preparing to succeed him.
Milstead on Wednesday submitted formal notice that he will step down after nearly three decades as the top law enforcement officer in South Dakota’s most populous county, ending a tenure in the post that began in May 1997.
