Lynn Aspaas, age 84, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Friday, November 28, 2025 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with Rev. Tim Selbo officiating.
A visitation with family present will take place from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church on Saturday. Family burial will follow at East Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, rural Baltic.
Lynn was born March 24, 1941 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Nils and Fayella Aspaas. On April 27, 1941 he was baptized into Christ Jesus. Lynn grew up on the family farm outside of Baltic and was always a proud Bulldog. He attended Augustana College (University) and in the summer of 1961 met the love of his life, Barbara Jensen. They were married in Rockford, IL on June 7, 1963, a week after graduating from Augustana. They were happily married for 51 years.
After a brief time in the Navy, Lynn returned to Sioux Falls to teach at Lincoln High School during the first two years it was open. Lynn received his Masters Degree in English from the University of South Dakota and taught at the Glenrock High School in Glenrock, Wyoming. In 1974 he returned to Baltic to manage Dakota State Bank. His career in banking continued for over two decades with The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, where he was Vice President of Human Resources until his retirement in 2002.
Lynn was devoted to community and civic life. He served on the Baltic School Board, the Baltic Lutheran Church Council, the Center for Western Studies Board, Sioux Falls Community Playhouse Board and the Olde Towne Dinner Theater Board.
Lynn thoroughly enjoyed his life with family and time with friends. He had a lifelong passion for hunting and shooting sports, a love of reading, appreciation for western art, a strong aptitude for music and a devotion to learning. In his spare time, Lynn would build muzzleloading rifles and WWII aircraft models, both with equal passion. Lynn and Barbara also loved to travel. In the early 90’s they jumped at the opportunity to go overseas to visit their daughter, while she lived in Japan, and their son, while he was studying in England. Attending Rendezvous and primitive camping with friends kept them on the go in the summers, as did trips to stalk the wily prairie dog. Lynn never left a room without telling a joke, often receiving equal measures of chuckles and groans.
Lynn died peacefully in his sleep on November 28, 2025 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls.
Lynn is survived by his daughter, Maren Aspaas (Lang Davison), and son Kyle Aspaas (Wendy). Lynn has three grandchildren, Sela Patterson (Nick Poplin), Kjerstin Aspaas and Jacob Aspaas and 2 great-grandchildren, Wren Poplin and Harper Poplin. Lynn is preceded in death by his wife Barbara (Jensen) Aspaas, parents Nils and Fayella Aspaas, and sister Kathryn (Aspaas) Hefty (Ronald Hefty).
Memorial gifts are greatly appreciated and can be directed to the Center for Western Studies at Augustana University or the Luther House of Study in Sioux Falls.
