CANTON—Lincoln County commissioners put another Marv Skie/Lincoln County Airport expansion step on hold Tuesday after Commissioner Joel Arends said the county should explore moving airport operations to a larger site west of Wild Water West.

The discussion marked a potentially significant change in direction for a county that is still investing in Marv Skie, which Lincoln County describes as one of South Dakota’s busiest airports. The existing airport sits northeast of Tea, and Arends argued its inability to accommodate a longer runway limits its future.

Commissioners voted 3-1 to delay for two weeks action on documents for taxiway construction serving a planned 20-acre hangar expansion. The delay gives county officials time to produce financial projections for the existing airport and more information about the cost of stopping work already underway.
