Lincoln County Commission sets timeline to fill vacancy
District 2 residents encouraged to apply to fill seat after Betty Otten resignation
CANTON — Lincoln County residents who want to fill the vacant District 2 seat on the County Commission have until 5 p.m. Monday, June 29, to submit a letter of interest.
Commissioners set the deadline for Monday after Commissioner Betty Otten’s resignation took effect on June 18. The board also agreed to begin interviews at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, and to continue the process at additional night meetings if more time is needed.
The appointment is necessary because commissioners said state law does not permit the county to call a special election to fill the District 2 vacancy. Because Otten’s resignation took effect after May 1, the vacancy will be filled by appointment rather than a special election. Under state law, the board has 35 days, or until the end of the second regular meeting after the vacancy occurs, whichever is later, to appoint a qualified District 2 resident. County officials said the deadline is July 23.
