Latest entrant into governor's race looks to make South Dakota history
Independent's candidacy follows run for Sioux Falls City Council in 2024
A longtime community organizer and advocate says she’s ready to take her message statewide, launching a long-shot campaign for South Dakota’s top office in 2026.
After announcing her intentions to run for governor over the weekend as an independent candidate, Sioux Falls-based political organizer Allison Renville told The Dakota Scout on Monday she’s been considering entering the contest for nearly two years.
“I’ve been saying out loud I’d run eventually, but as time went by the thought of how drastically our country needs action now was obvious,” said Renville, who looks to make history as the first non-Republican to win the governor’s post in more than 50 years. If elected she’d also be the first unaffiliated candidate to ever win the office, and only the second ever governor in state history who was not a member of either the GOP or Democratic Party.
