Housing Boom: S.D. among leaders in new home construction
Out-of-state arrivals driving growth in Custer County
New housing construction in South Dakota surged between 2020 and 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, with growth fueled in both western and eastern South Dakota.
The Census released data in May on new housing units added in each county in the United States. South Dakota saw a 6 percent increase in new units – a measurement of new housing minus the replacement of older housing. That number was almost double the national average and ranked South Dakota fifth in new housing among states and the District of Columbia.
The Census Bureau’s estimate on housing is broad, encompassed to capture single-family homes, multi-family residences and mobile homes.
Custer County saw the largest increase in housing at 16 percent between the start of the spring construction season in 2020 and July 1, 2023. Pennington County posted an 8 percent increase, while Black Hills counterparts Meade and Lawrence counties each had 7 percent increases.
