An “embarrassing” amount of populism has taken root in both the political left and right that could undermine the free trade policies contributing to the wealth of the United States, U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson said Thursday.

For each person in South Dakota, the state exports about $7,700 a year in agriculture and manufactured goods, he said. But some in both the Republican and Democratic parties want to establish more barriers to the world buying South Dakota-produced beans, beef, corn, and other goods.
